Sports

Scoil Naomh Molaise prides itself on our participation in a range of sporting activities. Sport and positive mental health and well-being are intrinsic to each other. Our aim is that all pupils have the opportunity to participate in a range of sports. Please see below a selection of sports the pupils of our school participate in.

Cumann na mBunscol

Our children love participating in Cumann na mBunscol competitions each year. We participate in both hurling and football, as well as rounders blitzes. Our teams are made up of pupils from 5th and 6th classes, and we encourage every child with an interest to join our initial school panel, regardless of whether they play Gaelic football outside of school. We have a proud tradition of Gaelic games and we welcome the opportunity to forge links and relationships with other schools. We are delighted to say we have been Cumann na mBunscol 8+ champions on a number of occasions, including last year (2022-23) when our senior girls won the Shield.

GAA Amigos

The GAA Amigos is a skills competition we particularly enjoy participating in. We love showing off the skills we have diligently practiced at school with our coach, Conor, and in our local club, St. Molaise Gaels. Our 6th class won a trip to the Connacht GAA Air Dome as a result of winning last year’s competition.

Mini 7s

We are delighted to participate in the mini 7’s, the precursor to the main Cumann na mBunscol competition each year. This competition has an age criteria, so some of our older pupils are not eligible to take part.  It is a great opportunity for our children to have more freedom to run and pass the ball with a shortened team. The prize for winning this competition is that a member of the team gets the opportunity to play in Croke Park at half-time in one of the All Ireland Football semi finals during the summer, which is a great incentive!

Coaching with Conor

Each year we participate in the Sligo GAA coaching programme for schools. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to learn and practise their skills with an experienced GAA coach. This year we are delighted to welcome Conor Gormley to Scoil Naomh Molaise. He has been working with the senior classes before Midterm and will work with the junior classes later in the year.

Other Sports

Super Valu Athletics

Following in the established tradition of athletics in  North Sligo (we are very proud of our past pupil, Chris O’Donnell), Scoil Naomh Molaise happily participates in the Super Valu Athletics meet each year. Representatives from 3rd to 6th take part and it is a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to compete against children from other schools and to experience the track and field facilities in ATU, Sligo.
